Dealing with "The Surveillance State" is easier than you think.
Back in the early 90's there was a cliche for emails.
"Never say or send anything you are not willing to see on the front page of the New York Times."
This now applies to all electronic communications, without exception.
Moscow Rules are in effect.
Me? I have nothing to say to anyone that is the least bit interesting...to anybody! LOL
In the mall lobby I get folks that are upset that we can no longer trust the government and "THEY are watching us!!!111!!!"
Chill, stay frosty, be cool. The stuff you send, the sites you visit are only going to be used IF they decide in the future something you are doing then is unacceptable to them (yes, it could be almost anything and retroactive laws are easily passed despite the Constitution). THEN your entire electronic history will be reinterpreted to support their case against you. Tough times, man. Suck it up. FIDO.
Is it outrageous? Hell Yes. But you are soooo last century, when America was mostly free.
HAHAHA, you want me to join your militia? LMFAO, 1 in 5 members you 'trust with your life' are government informants. Go away, no, really, you're bothering me. Move along.
As to the argument "If you are not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't mind."
or my favorite "You can trust the government not to misuse personal information."
1. What is not wrong today, may be "wrong" tomorrow.
2. Everyone should MYOB. LOL...we humans don't do that well.
3. Government people are routinely proven to be looking up personal information in government "confidential" databases and using the info for personal, salacious, political or criminal reasons. The Obamacare databases will be exciting to watch as they are misused.
To those who don't think the new tech of state surveillance is a likely problem: check just this one of many articles available.
I am close to being like L. Neil Smith's friend, just not as smart.

The Militarization of the Police
Simple: You are the enemy or close enough to the enemy not to matter. The police can only trust themselves (except for that idiot in 3rd Squad and the Brass). They work for the retirement package, not for you. Officer Friendly died long ago. RIP.
Their going home tonight and eventually retiring are the ONLY important things.
Remember too that they are young and went to modern schools that teach political correctness, not civics. So they are way more cynical than you imagine.
STFU, cooperate and pay your taxes or else! Sad times my friends.

Miscellaneous whines
Thank God I do not have to enforce parking regulations!
Yeah, I know, you'll 'just be a minute.'
No, I can't watch your car for you....or your kids or your tools.
Parking place lines? Lines? We don't need no stinking lines!

Parking lot stereo wars: Mexican polka derived music vs. Rap.
Never classical music for some reason....

The racial demographics at the mall (racist of me to notice, I know, so sorry snowflake) is now about 80% Hispanic, 17% African-American and the remainder white and Asian.
[BTW: snowflake is NOT a racist term...it refers to you unique individuality, not 'whiteness'...you racist. LOL]

A lady told me that it is right, necessary and appropriate for all Americans to learn to speak Spanish. I said "Yep, that day is soon upon us.") (BTW, Thanks for the assimilation!)
Blog Competition? Quelle horreur!
OK, so I totally ignore all the rules for a successful blog...leading to the barely googleable (unGoogleable?) obscurity of this endeavor. :)
I Googled "The Smiling Guard" and discover another "The Smiling Guard" blog, on Tumblr.
WTF is that blog about? Vf gur nhgube ntrq fvk? Ner gurl shpxvat vafnar?
OK, OK , no insults. Be mature but...really?
Now I know there is certainly no copyright on this blog's title, but really?!
Basic courtesy (admittedly rare today) is to spend a few minutes checking that your blog title is not already in use for another blog. About security guards!
I suppose they could have tried to call it Instapundit, Drudgereport or Amazon.
Luckily I never tell anyone about my blog but if I ever do so, I better be exceptionally clear on the URL. LOL

If all you have is a hammer, all problems look like nails.
If you go to a locksmith-solution space looks like locks, a contract guard company-solutions look like guards; same for intrusion detection-all solutions looks like IDS.
Cyber security solutions are applicable to physical security. Physical security concepts are applicable to cyber security.
LEARN about as many aspects of security as you can...and then cross functionally creatively apply them!
EVERYTHING has security implications and lessons that can be applied to your job. BE CREATIVE. :) But don't annoy your boss!
No one counter measure is sufficient or appropriate...even James Bond's exploding Lotus theft prevention system in For Your Eyes Only.
I had a test for guards their for education and fun.
Imagine the CEO comes to you and asks that you "secure that desk" and points his desk. How many ways can you think of complying with his order?
Most said "Put a lock on the drawers." Few went beyond that.
A few added: "Place a guard at the office door."
I had 55 solutions to his request BUT much better to ask "What exactly am I securing? What loss do you want to prevent?" This significantly narrows your choices.
Is it the Resolute Desk?, is it the bottle of Glenlivet in the desk?, is it the confidential merger information?, the picture of his mistress?, his cocaine stash?, his 357 magnum???
ASK!!!

In California, the security guard in the symphony parking lot makes
minimum wage and has no pension, even as he faces as much danger as his
counterpart in the state police.

...And with money came political clout. To freeze the pension contribution of a highway patrolman is a mortal sin; but no one worries much about the private security’s guard minimum wage and zero retirement, whose nightly duties are often just as dangerous. The former is sacrosanct; the latter a mere loser. ...

"It's frightening, and it is very upsetting," said Alameda County Superior Court Judge Joan Cartwright as she sentenced Marcus Ward, 23, to life in prison without the possibility of parole. "You have total lack of respect for anything."
...
Ward, however, said he didn't care about being sent to prison for life as Cartwright lectured the 23-year-old.
"Can you hurry up, 'cause I don't care," Ward said as Cartwright spoke.
Ward was found guilty of a special circumstances murder for killing Michael Schenk, 31, during a robbery. Ward devised a plan to rob Schenk, a pimp, with his girlfriend, Gequesha Nolan, 22, who was also a prostitute.
The killing occurred on Oct. 5, 2011, as Schenk sat in his car on Favor Street. Nolan took a plea deal in which she admitted committing second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life Friday.
Ward, however, was not offered a deal, and a jury found him guilty in less than two hours after a weeklong trial....

“Never call an unarmed man ‘security’,” Grossman said.
“Call him ‘run-like-hell-when-the-man-with-the-gun-shows-up’ but never call an unarmed man security.
"Imagine if someone said, ‘I want a trained fire professional on site. I want a fire hat, I want a fire uniform, I want a fire badge. But! No fire extinguishers in this building. No fire hoses. The hat, the badge, the uniform — that will keep us safe — but we have no need for fire extinguishers.’ Well, that would be insane. It is equally insane, delusional, legally liable, to say, ‘I want a trained security professional on site. I want a security hat, I want a security uniform, and I want a security badge, but I don’t want a gun.’ It’s not the hat, the uniform, or the badge. It’s the tools in the hands of a trained professional that keeps us safe.

The moment he stepped inside the restaurant, everybody became self-conscious and awkward. He was used to it. All uniformed cops were. Even law-abiding citizens felt guilty of something with a cop in the room; as if they were afraid that he could read their darkest thoughts or that they might be seized by a sudden, uncontrollable urge to commit a major felony. In his experience, only children greeted the sight of a police officer with enthusiasm and pleasure. Children like order and security. Most adults do too, but those feelings are complicated by issues of ego, dominance, control, status, and sex, all of which come bubbling up from the bog of the unconscious when you are confronted with a man with the power to take your freedom or your life.

...When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone.
The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded.
I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid.
It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.
It removes force from the equation... and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Grossman: Wolves and sheepdogs alike scare the sheep because they both bear the same fangs. The fangs are the equalizer. Implicit in this model is the understanding that any sheepdog without a gun has chosen to make him or herself, at least for that day, a sheep. Having the training and the will without the means still renders you powerless, when faced with a violent moment of truth.
